Abstract
Construct
systems are subject to reorganisation at points of transition, and adjusting to
parental ABI is no exception. This paper presents an analysis of the construal
processes of three families affected by parental ABI. In particular, aspects of
perceived similarity, commonality, and sociality are explored. The findings
highlight some of the difficulties faced by these families and the way in which
interactional processes may be perpetuated. Affected families may benefit from
systemic approaches to psychological support, whilst further research will
offer further understanding of interpersonal relationships, families' construal
throughout the recovery pathway, and changes to construal post-ABI.
Key words: Perceiver Element Grid (PEG), Acquired Brain Injury
(ABI), young people’s adjustment to parental ABI.
