EDITORIALDENNIS HINKLE'S THEORY OF CONSTRUCT IMPLICATIONS

** University of Huddersfield, UK

Dennis Hinkle’s PhD dissertation has been one of the most quoted references in the PCP literature since its submission in 1965. Yet it has been unavailable except to the very few who were lucky to own a personal copy – until 2010, thanks to a query by Simone Cheli to Fay Fransella who wanted to use Hinkle’s theory of implications in his work for his course in Italy. She decided to do what she had meant to for years – to scan the dissertation. With Dennis Hinkle’s permission that has been done and with Simone Cheli’s computer skills the thesis has been put into emailable form, whence it has been available from Fay Fransella personally – sponsored by the Centre for Personal Construct Psychology at the School of Psychology, University of Hertfordshire, UK (http://www.centrepcp.co.uk).

The Constructive Interventionist, the Centre’s newsletter, published an “introduction to Dennis Hinkle” by Fay Fransella and a “glance backward” by Dennis Hinkle himself. Both are included in this supplement, together with a note by Simone Cheli. The work Fay Fransella and Simone Cheli put into the re-creation of a thesis that was written forty-five years ago is thankfully acknowledged, as is Beverly Walker’s correspondence with Dennis Hinkle over the last ten years that paved the way for his renewed contact with the PCP community. Richard Butler has included an account by Dennis Hinkle of the writing of his dissertation in the book on reflexivity in PCT that he edited in 2009 (Hinkle, 2009).

Personal Construct Theory & Practice, the only academic journal devoted exclusively to the Psychology of Personal Constructs, is now in its seventh year as a peer-reviewed, free online journal. We are proud that we are able to start a series of ‘supplements’ to the journal with Dennis Hinkle’s legendary work.
